The Inspiration that is Julie Powell

I broke down and finally went to see "Julie and Julia." No, its not just about food. Its a great date movie for married couples, young and old, because it also about two marriages, Julie Powell's and Julia Child's. Food, apparently, is the food of love.

But the movie is also an inspiration for bloggers everywhere. Not just because Julie finally got a book contract and then a movie, but mostly because she pressed on with blogging when it seemed like no one was listening. Something I can very keenly relate to. I've written two different books as blogs, and SiteMeter tells me that they are lucky to get even 30 seconds of an Internet user's time. Ouch!

Two murderers, this one and that one, wrote blogs about the murders they were going to do, and no one even knew the blogs were out there until after the crimes were committed. To paraphrase what one reporter on the first incident said, "If a blog is unread in cyberspace, does it really exist?"

"Julie & Julia" shows Julie pressing on with her blog, day after day, until finally she gets a single comment. But it turns out to be from her mother, telling her she's wasting her time. But she still kept at it and at it. I suspect that ultimately, she decided that she was writing her blog purely for herself. The eventual comments and acclaim became icing on the cake. The essence of success.
